Well lets try and establish what Crabs are/is exactly and then we can cover its STD part. Crabs to put it simply are, get your barf bag ready, lice! So if they are lice, why would you call it Crabs? Answer because put under a microscope, they look like crabs. Take a break to puke here.

Now are Crabs an STD or not? In the strictest sense they might not even count as a disease. You don't call in a paramedic if your kid gets cooties, but they are a type of infection and may as well be a disease. We're talking about being infected with crab like lice. As for the STD, well Crabs is the name given to “pubic lice". Genital Crabs or Pubic Lice are found in the pubic hairs of humans which is where the name pubic lice came from. They are tiny little insects that Live and feed on human blood. While Genital Crabs generally live in the pubic area of your body, such as around the penis and vagina, they can sometimes be found in other areas such as armpits or beards. Precisely why showering is important.

So how can one contract Crabs? Pubic lice are usually spread through sexual contact. Rarely, infestation can be spread through contact with an infested person's bed linens, towels, or clothes. A common misbelief is that infestation can be spread by sitting on a toilet seat. This isn't likely, since lice cannot live long away from a warm human body. Also, lice do not have feet designed to walk or hold onto smooth surfaces such as toilet seats. So bottom line, if you have sex with someone who has Crabs, you will get it, and this is regardless of the kind of sex, i.e oral, or otherwise. I'm not even sure if a condom will help because we're talking bugs here. Its important to be honest with you partner. If you see excessive redness of the skin then ask him/her about getting tested. Crabs are not visible to the naked eye and therefore you can't say just by looking at someone that they have Crabs.

Crabs will not produce any serious symptoms and should not affect your health to a significant degree. However, you will experience some intense itching, especially at night when the crabs come out to feed.. Try not to scratch too much as this could break the skin and cause lesions.

You may find bluish spots where the crabs have been feeding. As they bite into the skin, bluish marks appear where any blood has been withdrawn. You may also notice dark spots on your skin or underwear. These spots are the crab feces and indicate a definite infection. It is also not uncommon to feel irritated and run down and even have a slight fever

One thing to bear in mind is that if you think you have Crabs, get tested and if you get confirmation that you have it, ask a doctor for a proper treatment instead of following your frat brother's advice and rubbing Vaseline on the infected area. Get proper treatment, if the condition is not cured, it can spread to you eyelashes because they too come under the head of human hairs. Besides that they are parasitic in nature so you want to deal with them properly.
