College Std Statistics
Okay! We made it, we're in college and we have left all the high school drama behind us. Peer pressure my ass! I'll be darned if I do something because everyone else is doing it. Thoughts like this go through our heads when we enter college. Although mentally we have matured and may be less prone to falling under peer pressure, but that does not guarantee we won't get drunk and light bozo the clown on fire.
The world of college brings with itself a degree of freedom that many young people are not used to and don't know how to handle. There is a point in time where we are told, “abstinence! Abstinence! Abstinence!" and then we're in college there is no one shouting that word at us, we are above eighteen and hence no need to fake an ID and we took the class about safe sex so what's the big deal?
The absolute freedom does tend to go to our heads and the world becomes our frat party. Soon enough we are victim to peer pressure without even knowing it and the stress of doing good at college and getting good grades, paying for college and our future scares us so much we think there is no harm in a little partying. But look out college students! You're are a great risk to contract an STD. even though you may have learned hoe to use a condom, and can to a good extent prevent unwanted pregnancies but the world of STDs is growing with a vengeance and most people think that HIV and Hepatitis are the only STDs out there.
If you want a true picture then here is a small sample of what the leadership U website has to say,
"Facts on Reproductive Rights," from the National Organization for Women
"Early college-age women show the highest percentage of contraceptive failure during the first 12 months of use (25.9%). Later college-age women rank second, not far behind (18.0%)." (Jones and Forrest, Family Planning Perspectives, (Jan/Feb 1992), p. 16)
Other horrific stats include that one of five Americans is now infected by a viral STD. sex is not a bad thing but when you're punch drunk and in a bar that looks like it used be a barn for animals, you need to think twice before letting someone stick their tongue in your mouth. Some other statistics show that men and women both tend to lie just to have sex. Sex isn't just a physical activity and when it comes to health one needs to be extra cautious. And remember that condoms do not prevent the transmission of STDs it's a form of contraceptive and even at that it does not provide a 100% guarantee.
Fact: In the U.S., 1 in 4 sexually active teens become infected with an STD every year and this includes the college going community. Sex is not a sport, be responsible and honest with your partner.
