Approaches In The Prevention Of Drug Abuse

There are various kinds of approaches involved in the prevention of drug abuses and through these methods the health of millions of people can be saved and nurtured. It has been seen that the most dramatic increase in drug use has happened in recent times and this can be blamed at the radical change in political and social beliefs, lifestyles. Right now, the traditional values, restrictions and even authoritative behavior of the parents are reasons for taking drugs.

The behaviors of children have been vehemently challenged by slightest refusals and the psychoactive drugs have emerged as popular means of enjoying life. There has also been a breakdown of traditional taboos and drugs are used as a mode of rebellion against the established order. There is also a lot off misinformation about drugs, which has been corrected in recent times.

Hence the doctors and social workers are able to formulate a more realistic appraisal of the problem. But there are various actions required to reduce the demand for drugs and their consumption. In this reference, interventions are not going to restrict the use of drug and this would only condemn drug use. Trying to frighten children about the potential dangers have been futile and this one of the best effective prevention strategies include making youngsters understand and see the harmful results of these drugs.

In this reference, influence of peers can often override the parental input and lead to consumption of drugs. The effective drug abuse prevention should be aimed at fundamental forces that lead to promotion of drug-taking in our society and this is based on the supply and demand.

One of the vital aspects here are to reduce the supply of illicit drugs even though it does little to alter the demand for drugs, it will help in reducing consumption eventually. The widespread availability and abundant supplies of drugs has made it easier for people to become involved in drug use. Most people are going to try and use drugs when they are surrounded by them and even children are included in this aspect.

Hence the solution to counter the supply problem would be to enforce and strengthen the laws against the manufacture along with the sale and possession of drugs. Also the lack of prohibition prevents elimination of the use of a drug by law enforcement efforts alone. The reduction of demand should be done through cultural forces and changing social attitudes toward drugs, especially for the children and teenagers.
