Female Hair Loss And Stress
The normal cycle of growth of hair lasts for two to six years. During this period each hair grows about one centimeter per month. Nearly 90 per cent of the hair on our scalp grows at any one time. 10 per cent remains in a resting phase. After about two to three months, this resting hair falls and new hair grows in its place. So it is absolutely normal to shed some hair every day. But in some cases the hair fall can become excessive. This type of loss can affect men, women and even children. There can be various reasons behind severe hair loss.
Stress is the major reason behind the loss of hair in women. A stress-free life can go a long way in preventing hair fall. Certain illness or surgery can also result in loss of hair. Often, this kind of hair loss can be temporary. Hormonal problems can lead to loss of hair. If our thyroid gland becomes overactive or under active, hair may start to fall off. Treating the thyroid gland and correcting the hormone imbalance can stop this hair fall.
Many women keep on losing hair after the birth of a baby. The high levels of certain hormones during pregnancy keep some hairs that should have fallen, in the body. Once the hormones return to the normal level after birth, these hairs start to fall off. Some medicines can lead to severe hair loss. Once the medicine is stopped the loss of hair also stops. Such medicines include blood thinners or anticoagulants, medicines used in chemotherapy while treating cancer, birth control pills, anti depressants, medicines for gout and too much intake of vitamin A.
Extreme emotional circumstances and stress are common factors for hair loss among women. Here, stress management can help to control the situation. Hair loss can occur due to some fungal infections of the scalp. Antifungal medicines can help to cure this problem. In female-pattern baldness, the hair starts thinning over the entire scalp. Heredity can also be the reason behind severe hair fall.
Not taking care of one's hair can also lead to hair fall. Pigtails, cornrows or tight hair rollers can cause traction alopecia. If the pulling of the hair is stopped before the scalp gets stressed out, hair can grow back normally. If scarring occurs, it can lead to permanent hair loss. Hot oil hair treatments or chemicals used in perming can cause inflammation of the hair follicle leading to hair loss. Diseases like diabetes, anemia, anorexia, bulimia, liver disease, hepatic failure, renal failure and protozoan infections can lead to hair loss.
Reduced stress, proper diet, regular menstrual cycles, adequate sleep, daily exercise and the right intake of water can help one in preventing hair loss. Stopping certain medicines, hormone therapy, treating infections can also help to prevent hair fall. Some treatments are available in the market to treat severe hair loss. Certain medicines and hair oils can help to reduce baldness. The beauty salons offer various hair treatments to help reduce hair fall. If no treatment works, one has no option but to opt for wigs, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement.
