Best Weight Loss Drugs

Overweight or obese people sometimes get tired of diet and exercise, and feel like using weight loss drugs instead. In fact, there are various types of weight loss drugs available in the market these days. But unfortunately for those people mentioned above, it is impossible to depend solely on drugs and do away with diet or exercise for weight loss. If used judiciously along with diet and exercise, such weight loss drugs can prove to be quite helpful in your efforts to lose extra fat.

However, there is a huge difference between those diet pills which you can purchase easily from your local chemist and genuine, prescription weight loss drugs. The over-the counter pills can only give a boost to your metabolism with the help of a mixture of various herbal compounds and a good dose of caffeine. While this serve the purpose of those who use them along with diet and exercise, it fails to make one lose weight in more severe cases.

It is not, however, easy to obtain prescription weight loss drugs. Your doctor will recommend some weight loss drugs and write a prescription only if he/she is convinced that you really need them. In normal practice, weight loss drugs are prescribed only to those who have a body-mass index (BMI) of more than 27. Sometimes, that also is not sufficient; doctors decide to prescribe drugs only if that person suffers from symptoms related to obesity.

There are various types of symptoms relating to obesity such as heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, cancer and many more. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, it is essential for you to lose weight, and fast. Weight loss is thus a serious business that is necessary for tackling some life threatening health problems.

Usually a majority of weight loss drugs are meant to be used only for a short duration, say 15 days or at most a month. Of course there are some weight loss drugs meant for long-term use, but the safety of using them is not yet beyond doubt. In such cases, it is your doctor again who can advise you about the dosage and duration of time that you should continue to use any weight loss drugs he/she prescribes for you.

The weight loss drugs we find today can be classified into two types: appetite suppressors or fat absorption inhibitors. The drug makers often make lofty claims that these drugs will make you feel less hungry. Or, if you use these drugs, the amount of fat that gets stored after you eat will be less. But the US has declared only one fat absorption inhibitor as legal, as a result of which a doctor will more often than not prescribe an appetite suppressant. Interestingly, weight loss drugs that suppress appetite actually work on your head, and not your stomach. They trigger the release of a natural chemical in your brain that keeps your appetite under control.

It is difficult to identify the best weight loss drugs from so many of them. However, if these drugs are used in combination with diet and exercise, and also doctor's advice when necessary, one is bound to lose weight.
