Alcohol tends to relax the tongue and other organs in the mouth, causing them to fall back and partially block the breathing passage. People must need to watch their body weight and exercise regularly. As overweight people have larger fatty throat muscles to block the airway. Most overweight people tend to snore while sleeping. Besides snoring, being overweight can cause other health problems as well.

People should avoid smoking as smoking actually irritates and enlarges those interior mouth tissues. Allergies or colds also cause snoring at night. Anything that causes congestion, would qualify as an obstruction of the breathing airway. The membranes inside the nasal cavities swell and there is an increase of mucous. Less air flows through the airway, so the body sucks in more air through the mouth. People should try using a steamer, or if it is a temporary cold, they should try the nasal strips that are on the market today.

People should try any of the above steps to avoid snoring first, before spending their money on the many other more expensive products for sale on the market, such as special pillows, face masks, oral appliances and others, as there is some controversy when trying to measure their effectiveness.
