The Atkins diet has been known to give desired results and celebrities have sworn by it. Thus, this has been one of the major results for the popularity of this diet. There are thousands of people around the world who have followed this diet and agree to its health benefits and other related benefits. There have also been some negative effects of the Atkins diet and there are harmful effects of this diet. The Atkins diet has been known for leading to certain liver ailments and has been a problem for the vegetarians.

But the demand for weight loss and the success of the diet also gave rise to a vegetarian version of the diet. Basically the Atkins diet had been primarily set up as a low carb diet, and was meant for the non-vegetarians. However along the way, the concept of the Atkins diet for vegetarians emerged, where the emphasis on protein and health would be retained. Even though this diet would not be necessarily meant for vegans, most of the meals in this diet were vegetarian.

Hence the foods, which existed in the regular Atkins diet, were substituted with other meals and foods that were mainly vegetarian. For the vegetarians, this diet implied more consumption of nuts and seeds and fruit.

This would last for first two week stage and only 20 grams of carbohydrates were allowed on a daily basis. The need to count the carbohydrates during the first two weeks was vital for the Atkins diet for vegetarians. This happened because the vegetables were the sources from where the carbohydrates were coming.

The Atkins diet for vegetarians had healthy carbs, but during the induction stage of the Atkins diet this had to be maintained at the lowest level possible of carbs.

There was also a need for an increased protein level on the Atkins diet for vegetarians. Hence the vegetarians had to become an ovo-lacto vegetarian here, which meant that the consumption of eggs, cheese, and milk was vital. This was the only possible way to do this diet the vegetarian way. The use of cheese, eggs, and tofu ensure that the vegetarians were able to follow the diet. And thus following this diet over a period of some weeks gave the required results of weight loss.
