Gynecology and Obstetrics is the part of modern medicine that deals with the reproductive system of women and the disorders found. Obstetrics is the surgical area of expertise skillfully dealing with pregnancy, labor and post natal care. Gynecology, where as, deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the disorders related to the female reproductive system such as uterus, vagina and ovaries.

Maternal care and a series of several blood tests have to be regularly performed for child care. These clinical reflections of physiological changes in the tests help to analyze growth of a child and its effect on the mother. Gynecology and Obstetrics treatment normally rely on medications, diet control and life style alteration. Surgery is popularly practiced at times such as termination of pregnancy, dilation and curettage of the uterine contents, hysterectomy, tubal ligation, oophorectomy, exploratory laparoscopy, colposuspension, etc.

Gynecology and Obstetrics is one of the most special parts of medical branches with many sub specializations. The rates of gynecological disorders are increasing alarmingly because of the modern life style. There are more than 3,000 child births per year at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center as reported. A significant proportion of these women are at high risk secondary to on-going medical or obstetric problems. St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center was the first hospital in Northern New Jersey to be designated a Level III perinatal center. Four faculty perinatologists presently staff the perinatal service. A geneticist and genetic counselors are also available to the patients, as well as an anesthesiologist specially trained in obstetric anesthesia.



The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology generally offer an accredited residency since the year of 1967. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology shares the Hospital's mission of providing high quality medical care and emotional support to all patients regardless of financial status. A wide range of pregnant women receive care here. Women with normal pregnancies or women with high risk pregnancies who are transferred there for specialized care, women requiring routine gynecologic care and women requiring specialized treatment for gynecologic cancer or infertility are treated with special care an attention. The residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology department is fully accredited for the training of eight residents. The Obstetrics and Gynecology department, in addition, provides clinical training for family practice residents and medical students from two universities.
