Ergonomic Keyboard Information

Working on a computer involves using the keyboard. The keyboard is used to type letters and numbers. An overuse of the keyboard can lead to various musculoskeletal disorders, more so, if the typing is done with the hands either bent up or down or to the side. The common disorders that occur due to this are carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis or tendosynovitis. Keyboards that are designed to help the user tide over such disorders are termed ergonomic keyboards. This keyboard won't force the wrists and hands into alignments that can cause damage to the body. Ergonomic keyboards are usually costlier than normal ones.

An ergonomic keyboard helps to reduce strain and fatigue, improve comfort level while typing, retain the right posture while working and lessen arm, hand, neck and shoulder pain. Such keyboards can be of different types. Split keyboards are elevated in such a way so as to allow the wrists to assume a natural posture while typing. Keyboards like the DataHand and the OrbiTouch are effective in reducing the strain on the hands and wrists. OrbiTouch is keyless. Here, two domes have replaced the keys.

The TouchStream keyboard needs zero pressure to use the keys. The mouse is integrated to the keyboard and a tap is equal to a mouse click. DVORAK keyboards have the keys arranged in a normal layout. A fixed split keyboard has the keys separated into two or three groups in a single board. This allows the user to type at different angles. This type of ergonomic keyboard has become a popular alternative to the usual keyboard.

The keyboard is split into many independent pieces in an adjustable split keyboard. This allows easy change of the angles between them. Among the other ergonomic keyboards are those that have fixed, vertically aligned keys. Here, the user types with his or her hands perpendicular to the ground. Many other keyboards allow a range of elevations and rotations. A DataHand keyboard eliminates the need for any wrist movement.

While buying an ergonomic keyboard certain features need to be checked like the keyboard should be programmable, there should be separate sections, springy keys, long warranty period, adjustable cord, PS2 or USB connections and touch pad. A keyboard with springy keys leads to the user suffering less strain and reduced carpal tunnel syndrome. A touch pad replaces the mouse and allows point and click operations without the hands being removed from the keyboard.

Among the advantages of an ergonomic keyboard are reduction in muscle strain and reduced carpal tunnel syndrome. After one gets adjusted to an ergonomic keyboard, typing becomes easier and faster. However, these keyboards can take more space on the computer table thus forcing the mouse to be kept at a distance. Another disadvantageous factor is the cost. Ergonomic keyboards are too costly compared to the normal ones, thus discouraging people from buying one. A keyboard put in a neutral position helps the user to control strain. Other ergonomic measures that can be taken are adjusting one's sitting posture, the position of the keyboard and the height of the desk chair so as to allow the feet to rest flat on the floor.
