Define Ergonomics

What is ergonomics? It is the branch of engineering science in which biological science is used to study the relation between workers and their environments. Though this appears to be a new term to many, it has already taken the world by storm owing to specific competence. In this very discipline researches are done by people who investigate human capabilities in relationship to their work demands. Information derived from these studies becomes a factor to the design and evaluation of tasks, jobs, products, environments and systems so as to make them well-matched with the needs, abilities and limitations of people.

In short, ergonomics is concerned with the 'fit' between people and their work and consists of the worker's capabilities and limitations in seeking to make sure that tasks, equipment, information and the environment suit each worker. It should be noted that in order to gauge the fit between a person and its work researchers consider several factors at the same time. These include the job being done and the demands on the worker; the equipment used (its size, shape, and how appropriate it is for the task), and the information used (how it is presented, accessed, and changed). Keep in mind that ergonomics makes use of several disciplines in its study of humans and their environments, including anthropometry, biomechanics, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, industrial design, kinesiology, physiology and psychology.
