Binge Eating Disorder Treatmen
Many people think that eating disorders are all related to weight reducing issues but the only commonality that all eating disorders hav is that they have at their root some emotional or psychological problem. But because eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia have a more pronounced effect on the person, they get more attention. Everyone can eventually see that a person is getting skinnier and skinnier, or that they have started eating less or next to nothing if not nothing. But there is another very serious disorder out there that often manages to hide under the label of obesity and that is binging.
Binging unlike anorexia and bulimia does not involve throwing up what you eat or getting thin. Its when a person eats their emotion. Sure sometimes when you're depressed, grand ma's cookies are like the perfect cure. But when you eat every time you get upset or experience a drastic change in emotions you have a problem. Binging is eating constantly. And this disorder hides itself well in its victims. Growing children. I mean if you're kid is eating a lot you're bound to pass it off as a growing requirement. After all, teenagers do need their energy. But the energy should come from balanced and planned timely meals not a constant hand in the chip bag. And add to that the fact that you're gonna feel guilty for eating and we have our eating disorder. People who binge worry about their weight too. They know that they are overweight but when they encounter a difficult situation they go, “hey I can't help being fat, but I can make myself feel better by eating". And they tend to do just that.
Unfortunately binge eating is not only caused by the emotional state of a person. Other things like the eating habits that one has grown up with also affect how a person makes himself feel better. And the treatment is equally difficult perhaps even more than anorexia because the person will at first feel embarrassed at the problem. They can't admit they eat too much and can't control themselves. Its not like anorexia when your mother can tell that you have gone down two sizes in clothes and look like an underwater sea creature. And above all its up to the person to realize for themselves that they are eating out of control.
A person who binges needs professional help because the disorder although is seen as overeating, is deeply embedded with the brain. The brain causes behavior beyond the control of a person and urges him to continue eating. A psychiatrist needs to be consulted because at the core this is emotional eating and even if you get a person to stop eating when they are upset and follow a proper diet, the thing is that the emotions that caused the problem are still there and may emerge as anorexia now that the person has been set on the weight reducing path of proper eating. Also never try to cure these disorders yourself and don't try to diet them away because when the mind takes the side of the disease it results in periods of escalation of the disease.
