Binge Eating Disorder Statistics

People with various eating disorders eat in such a manner that badly compromises their physical health. The manner of disordered eating may vary in several ways like; this may be excessive or very limited, or eating all the wrong unhealthy foods. Among different types of eating disorders, bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa and binge eating rise as the most adamant diseased cases particularly in western countries. Surveys on various eating disorders state that over a span of one lifetime there are at least 50, 000 people who will die because of eating disorders. Confirmed statistics of eating disorder show that there are an estimated total of 7 million females suffering from some type of eating disorder, in comparison to 1 million males. Eating disorders surpass all ages. Statistics of the disease show that 10% of all eating disorder cases are reported to occur specially in young children who are 10 years old or less, 33% of the reported cases are between 11-15 years of age, 43% between the ages of 16-20 and 86% of the cases are reported in individuals who are 20 years and older.

Bulimia nervosa, Anorexia nervosa, and Binge eating strongly affect more women than men. Studies on eating disorder state that women get figure conscious a little more so then men. Normally the athletes and teenage students commonly suffer from eating disorders mainly because of the pressure of society on being skinny. Athletes who are involved in sports such as figure skating, gymnastics, dancing and synchronized swimming are more likely to develop an eating disorder. Later on eating disorders include anorexia; bulimia and binge eating have been steadily and worryingly growing over the last three decades. It is hard to say accurately how much or how extensive the disease has grown.

There are a number of statistical data available on eating disorder, but they must be looked at with caution as there are certain limitations. Various researches have used different criteria which actually makes it difficult to assimilate the information. Also a characteristic of a certain type of eating disorder is that there is a feeling of shame likely in purging for example, as well as secretiveness involved which mean that disclosure is limited. Another aspect is that the eating disorder has to be diagnosed at earliest, and there are many people suffering from an eating disorder who are not undergoing proper treatment or are in denial, or even unaware of their disordered condition.

What is known to all is that, eating disorders have been on the augmentation and include not only adolescent girls, but younger children or even both boys and girls. The disorder also includes men and women over twenty or in a few cases over seventy. According to the statistics women from the baby boomer generation can also be at risk of this disorder as they have grown up with strong image consciousness
