Ear Wax - What You Need To Know

Ear wax is the name given to a sticky substance that is secreted by the cerumen glands in the ear. Even though the ear wax accumulation can be a little irritating and embarrassing when it builds up too much, normal amounts actually serve a useful purpose. In fact it is the natural way for the system to protect the ear by guarding it from foreign objects, dirt and even small insects that might try to crawl in. Ear wax acts like fly paper and it will trap any potentially harmful foreign particle or substance and hold it in place until it can be removed.

Ear wax prevents potential irritants from going deeper into the ear where they can cause serious harm. So ear wax is a good thing and why it is vital to ear health. But, the irritation occurs when people have too much wax build-up inside the ear. Sometimes the body produces an excessive amount of wax, which can lead to problems. When too much ear wax accumulate inside and start to harden it can interfere with the ability to hear. Even the sounds can become muffled and over time if the wax hardens and becomes packed tightly in the ear canal. The condition also can be very painful.

Wax build-up can also cause a ringing sound in the ear that can be quite annoying and interfere with the hearing. It can even cause a tickling sensation in the throat that makes people want to cough. The reason for this condition is because the throat and the ear share the same nerves. Whenever the wax builds up to the point where it begins to cause problems, people need to have it removed. People can find several ear wax removal products sold on the market that can help with this process or if they have had problems with their ears in the past, they may want to see a professional for this procedure.

The more wax people get, the better it is to get rid of the stuff regularly to forestall any infections. When people shower, should tilt their head slightly and briefly to let a little hot water run in one ear. Then should tilt their head to the other side to let the water escape. This process should be done with the other ear. This technique may heat the wax to the point where it melts and runs out of the ears on its own. Thus, people may need nothing more.

But the wax could still continue to build up inside. For that matter people should not get worried, there is some thing more they can do, assuming they do not have a perforated ear drum, something their doctor would apprise them of after sticking a little scope in their ears. If people are too much of a cheapskate to go to the pharmacy and purchase some ear drops, they can heat olive oil to body temperature and put a few drops in each ear. They can use a bit of cotton to keep the stuff from running out and staining their dress. People can do this for three or four days, then need to use an ear syringe or a large hypodermic syringe without the needle, of course, to flush the ears with tepid water. People should make sure they do not get the tip of the syringe too close to their eardrum, which could make a blast of water dangerous.
