A symptom is a subjective state that an individual experiences. It is a sensation that can only be felt by the patient. A sign, on the other hand, is an objective evidence of a disease that can be seen by others along with the patient. Lower back pain, abdominal pain, fatigue, anxiety, etc are symptoms while a bloody nose, broken leg, etc are signs. An index is a data or information structure that helps us to function smoothly. It is helpful to know the different signs and symptoms of various diseases. The knowledge helps to diagnose the cause of the health problem and monitor the recovery. The effectiveness of the treatment provided and the side effects that occur can also be determined through the signs and symptoms.

Rash, fever, cough, headache, abdominal pain, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, pain, vision changes are some of the common symptoms found in quite a few diseases. Symptoms can be chronic, remitting or relapsing. They may gradually become better or worse. Some symptoms can occur in a wide range of diseases, whereas others are specific for selected illnesses. Sometimes, symptoms can also be misleading. Gall bladder inflammation can lead to pain in the shoulder. But the pain often gets attributed to muscle strain.

Some ailments and conditions of the body and mind that can be diagnosed through the different symptoms include HIV, diabetes, flu or influenza, heart attack, STD, pneumonia, cancer, menopause, depression and early pregnancy among others. Though various tests are conducted by the doctors before proper medication and treatment begin, the symptoms often help the patient and the family members to start off with emergency treatment.

Influenza symptoms include fever (between 100° F to 103° F), respiratory problems like cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches and fatigue. The early symptoms of pregnancy include missed menstrual periods, swelling and tenderness of the breast, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and tiredness, abdominal bloating, frequent urination, changes in nipple color, darkening of the skin, mood swings and stress.

Symptoms of diabetes are elevated blood sugar levels and loss of glucose in the urine. Some patients also complain of blurred vision, weight loss, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. People with pneumonia initially have symptoms of a cold which is followed by high fever, shaking chills and a cough with sputum. Cancer includes about 100 different diseases in different parts of the body. It occurs when cells become abnormal and keep dividing into more cells without control, forming a growth or tumor. Malignant tumors are categorized as cancer.

Symptoms of menopause include irregular vaginal bleeding, hot flashes and night sweats, vaginal dryness, pain during sexual intercourse, urinary tract infection, memory problems and rapid changes in mood. Symptoms of depression include persistently sad, anxious, angry, irritable mood, feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, loss of interest in hobbies and activities, insomnia, weight loss or weight gain, fatigue, crying spells, suicide attempts and restlessness.
