In an autoimmune disease, the immune system attacks most of the normal body cells. These Borrelia are difficult to isolate and most of the times they grow, and are studied in the laboratory. There are chances that the transmission of Borrelia occurs primarily through the bite of ticks. Hence LD actually affects every tissue and every major organ system in the body.

Its symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, fever, lameness, heart disease, loss of appetite, inflamed joints and kidney disease. Though uncommon, disorders of the nervous system can also occur. Though a vaccine is available for preventing lyme disease, it has not yet been approved by medical researchers.

Young ticks, or nymphs, are about the dimension of a poppy seed. Mature ticks are about the size of a sesame seed. So spotting them is very difficult with naked eyes.
