Alberta Dental Care

Dental decay and periodontal or gum disease are among the most ordinary diseases afflicting mankind, especially in the so-called advanced nations. The higher the standard of living, the more likely it is for tooth loss to take place. As has been already mentioned both dental caries and periodontal disease are the result of bacterial action, in the plaque, which accumulates on the teeth and gums. If it is probable to cleanse the mouth totally of the bacterial plaque and sustain it that way, there would be low incidence of tooth decay or any other gum problems. Dental disease is not measured to be lethal and therefore attitudes on the part of governments and public are of a different nature.

Nevertheless, the cost of dental disease in painful and expensive, suffering, treatment and loss of work is great. Steps to reduce or eliminate dental problems would result in a vast advantage to the population. Dental care is expensive and is not covered by the Alberta Health Insurance plan. Most Albertans have a private dental insurance plan either through their work or college, university or school to help people pay the costs of dental care. This initiative by the government helps most countrymen to have a healthy dental set. We can also help our selves in keeping the dental costs low by eating a healthy diet and cleaning our teeth every day twice.

Often with many people they cannot afford the cost of going to the dentist, few options that are available otherwise in the country of Alberta for its citizen. The Alberta Child Health Benefit offers free children's dental care (up to age 17) to low-income families. If the family is eligible, they can make appointments for their children to see a private dentist at no cost. This is a very big advantage for people who cannot afford to pay a heavy price for dental check ups.

The University of Alberta (in Edmonton) also offers reduced-fee dental care to selected clients. The dental work is done by students, under secure management of qualified instructors. The students get a hand on experience and in a way they get to help those in need. Though the price is reduced it as good as paying half the price for something as vital as dental care. In another university the University of Alberta students also provide reduced-fee care at three satellite clinics in Northern Alberta.

Disadvantaged residents across many towns and cities in Alberta can also be eligible to attend a dental visit for free on "Open Wide" Day - usually a Saturday in April. On this day, private dentists, dental hygienists and other professional staff donate their time and materials to help people who cannot otherwise afford a dental visit. Residents of the Calgary Health Region who earn a poverty-line income and have no dental insurance can also be eligible to receive reduced-fee dental care at some community dental clinics.

Dental care includes taking good care of our teeth, gums and the related structures of the mouth. Dental care includes prevention and treatment of diseases of the gum and teeth, and also the substitute or repair of imperfect teeth. In many cases people suffer from dental diseases due to laziness and lack of knowledge towards proper dental care. We fail to realize that healthy teeth and gum is extremely important to keeping our healthy and sound. Proper dental health is not only essential to our healthy physical looks; it is critical to the well being of the entire body.
