Critical care or Intensive care as it is often referred to as, is the care needed by and given to patients who are struggling with life threatening injuries or illnesses. As such the field is a high paced one and those involved, from paramedics, to physicians, to nurses all need to be on their toes 24/7. Critical care professionals are trained specifically for the highly sensitive work. The patients under their care need constant and close monitoring. They also have to make decisions at a moment’s notice and that’s about all the time they often have to save a person’s life.
The critical care costs at hospitals are so costly that it is bankrupting many families and causing so much stress that the survivors are having heart attacks. So, even if critical care systems are able to save the person, the family is bankrupt or the individual ends up on state aid. It is a travesty to see the critical care system so messed up and all the plans to fix it are simply unworkable. Expecting the government to foot the bill, can only raise medical taxes and cause prices to rise in critical health care system.
The Colorado Critical Care Institute is representing the College of Chest Physicians as a member of a collaborative of professional societies that share a belief that care of the critically ill should be patient-focused, readily accessible, multidisciplinary, and reach beyond the walls of the intensive care unit. The Critical Care Collaborative is made up of the ACCP-CCI, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), and the National Association for Medical Direction of Respiratory Care (NAMDRC), and both the Illinois and Florida chapters of the Society of Respiratory Care (SRC).
